Athletes from around India compete against one another in a variety of events during the National Games of India. First staged in North India (Delhi, Allahabad (now Prayagraj), Patiala, Madras (now Chennai), Calcutta (now Kolkata), and Bombay (now Mumbai), the nation's first Olympic Games were now called the National Games.

The Olympic movement, which gained popularity in the nation in the 1920s, is the source of the National Games. The National Games were started in order to find national talent that may be selected for the Olympic Games. The Indian Olympic Games were first held in Lahore, in an undivided Punjab, in 1924 as a result of the combined efforts of Dr. A. G. Noehren and Harry Crowe Buck to integrate and harness the energy of the youth into a pan-India athletic event.

Lahore was the venue for the first three tournaments. Following its eighth iteration in Calcutta in 1938, the competition was renamed the National Games. The first post-independence National Games were held in Lucknow, while the first National Games modeled after the Olympics were held in New Delhi in 1985.

The Indian Olympic Association has complete control over the duration and rules of the National Games. The Olympic Movement has maintained its luster and energy despite the many times when it has been under stress and hardship. Conversely, it is growing stronger as a result of the national state governments' involvement in the development of advanced, cutting-edge infrastructure in places like Guwahati, Ranchi, Kerala, and now Goa.
